Chapter 7 - The seventh chapter of Revelation

Revelation Chapter Seven

Rev 7:1  And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree.

Rev 7:2  And I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea,

Rev 7:3  Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads.

The phrase after these things I saw indicates another vision

Remember, these visions are not consecutive events

They are not one following another, but rather a series of parallel visions covering the same period of time

This vision covers the same period as the previous vision…from the time of the first coming of Christ until the second coming

We see first pictured here four angels on the four corners of the earth holding the four winds

It was given to them to hurt the earth and sea and trees

Given this symbol is draw from nature, we would expect the winds to be political

The tempestuous winds coming from all points of the compass, 4 corners

We will see in the next chapter these are hordes of barbarians unleashed on the Roman Empire

These winds could not blow, could not bring harm, until the servants of the Lord were sealed

This seal of God denotes God’s ownership, and His protection

Reminiscent of God’s judgment on Israel

Eze 9:4  And the LORD said unto him, Go through the midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem, and set a mark upon the foreheads of the men that sigh and that cry for all the abominations that be done in the midst thereof.

Eze 9:5  And to the others he said in mine hearing, Go ye after him through the city, and smite: let not your eye spare, neither have ye pity:

Eze 9:6  Slay utterly old and young, both maids, and little children, and women: but come not near any man upon whom is the mark; and begin at my sanctuary. Then they began at the ancient men which were before the house.

Rev 7:4  And I heard the number of them which were sealed: and there were sealed an hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel.

Rev 7:5  Of the tribe of Juda were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Reuben were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Gad were sealed twelve thousand.

Rev 7:6  Of the tribe of Aser were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Nepthalim were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Manasses were sealed twelve thousand.

Rev 7:7  Of the tribe of Simeon were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Levi were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Issachar were sealed twelve thousand.

Rev 7:8  Of the tribe of Zabulon were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Joseph were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Benjamin were sealed twelve thousand.

This sealing of God’s people was 12,000 from each tribe of Israel

Not the literal tribes of Israel, this represents God’s people, the Israel of God in the gospel dispensation (twelve gates of the heavenly Jerusalem named for the twelve tribes)

The twelve tribes as well as the twelve thousand represent the completeness of God’s people

12 – complete, no part omitted

Rev 7:9  After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands;

Rev 7:10  And cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb.

Rev 7:11  And all the angels stood round about the throne, and about the elders and the four beasts, and fell before the throne on their faces, and worshipped God,

Rev 7:12  Saying, Amen: Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour, and power, and might, be unto our God for ever and ever. Amen.

Rev 7:13  And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, What are these which are arrayed in white robes? and whence came they?

Rev 7:14  And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

Rev 7:15  Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple: and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them.

Rev 7:16  They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat.

Rev 7:17  For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.

Again the phrase and after this

Sometime later …

This scene is carried forward to the close of this long period of persecution

This is the scene at the end of the age

We see a great multitude that no man could number from every nation, kindred and tongue

They stood before the throne and before the Lamb

Clothed in white – righteousness

Praising God and Christ for salvation

All the angels, the elders and the beasts join in the worship

Who are these?
